Care and changeovers
Cleaning the grinder and changing your coffee
Changing coffee and cleaning a grinder are related, but they are not the same task. Emptying the hopper changes the visible beans. Clearing the grinding path deals with coffee that remains inside. Cleaning removes accumulated material from the parts the manufacturer allows you to access.
Make the regular cleaning job easy to repeat
Before buying, look at the care section rather than stopping at a claim of removable burrs. How do you reach them? Which parts come out, which tools are needed and how do they go back? If you would not be comfortable doing the documented procedure, consider the maker's service support as part of the purchase.
The Encore ESP manual, pages 7–10 separates hopper removal, ring-burr access and deeper cone-burr removal. A useful maintenance plan does not require dismantling everything whenever you see a few loose grounds. Follow the appropriate level of care and retain the small parts in their documented order.
Check each part's washing instructions
“Removable” does not mean dishwasher-safe. The Capresso Infinity Plus 570/575 manual, page 6 permits specified containers on the top rack while excluding the upper burr and collar. The KM5 manual, pages 6–8 says its grinder parts are not dishwasher-safe. Apply the rule for the exact part and model, not another appliance that looks similar.
Unplug before cleaning or removing components, as the manuals instruct, and distinguish cleaning from an ordinary powered grind adjustment. Keep liquids away from the powered assembly. Use the manufacturer's specified dry cleaning method for burrs; do not assume that a washable plastic bin means the grinding mechanism can be rinsed.
Use the prescribed materials
Brushes and purpose-made grinder cleaning products may have different roles. Read whether the maker allows a cleaning product, which procedure it specifies and how any residue is cleared afterward. The KM5 instructions explicitly reject rice. A popular household shortcut is not a substitute for the permitted method.
Cleaning frequency also belongs to the model and your use. Look for the maker's interval, then pay attention to the kinds of beans and the condition of the grounds path. Record a simple reminder that you can maintain. If dispensing changes unexpectedly, inspect the documented troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly extending the grind time to compensate.
Plan a sensible change of beans
If you change coffee often, avoid filling more of the hopper than your routine needs. Check for a shutoff mechanism and the approved removal sequence. A removable hopper can simplify emptying, but there can still be beans or grounds below it.
Follow the model's guidance for clearing the path when moving to a different coffee or setting. We do not prescribe one purge weight for every grinder. A small single-dose workflow and a large hopper grinder do not necessarily leave coffee in the same places, and changing from coarse filter grinding to fine espresso can involve more than swapping beans.
Be realistic about separation
If one household member drinks decaf and another does not, decide whether sharing a grinder and performing changeovers is acceptable. Do not treat an empty hopper or a quick brush as proof of complete separation. Where strict separation matters, a dedicated grinder avoids relying on an unverified changeover procedure.
The best cleaning arrangement is one you can understand, perform and repeat. Read the maintenance steps alongside the loading and dosing steps before choosing. A small amount of routine care is easier to plan for than a grinder whose internal cleaning you discover only after it begins dispensing poorly.
The Encore ESP and KM5 reviews connect maintenance access to the rest of each grinder's everyday workflow.
