Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the AP grind a timed espresso dose directly into a supported handle?
Yes. The 2022 configuration includes a PortaHolder and explicitly supports time or manual operation with it. Adjust it for secure support of the actual handle.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its built-in scale stop that directly received portafilter dose by weight?
No. The PortaHolder covers the scale platform, and the manual says weight mode is unavailable with it installed. Weight dosing uses the bin instead.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I collect a filter dose by weight into the bin?
Yes. Remove the holder, place the bin evenly on the platform, select weight mode and tare as directed. Avoid contact between the bin and the body.
Explore this need in the finder →An AP with two different receiving workflows
This assessment covers the Forté AP configuration in Baratza's August 2022 touch-screen manual. It supports home and commercial preparation, with ceramic flat burrs, macro/micro adjustment and both a grounds bin and a supplied PortaHolder. The control edition matters: it should not be combined with an unidentified later display revision.
The main buying distinction is how you want to receive and measure the coffee. The AP can stop at a selected weight into the bin, or use time/manual operation with the holder. Those are different supported combinations, not one universal weighed-portafilter feature.
The holder covers the scale
The manual states that the PortaHolder prevents use of the weight function because it covers the scale platform. For an integrated target-weight dose, remove it and place the bin correctly on the platform. For a directly supported espresso handle, use the documented time or manual arrangement.
This makes the AP versatile without eliminating a real tradeoff. If you need a weighed dose and want to use the built-in system, collect it in the bin and transfer it. If your priority is direct handle delivery, establish and check the timed dose instead.
Adjust the holder as instructed so your particular portafilter sits properly. The reviewed material does not establish a universal diameter range. Supporting a handle securely involves its shape and seating as well as a nominal basket size.
Weight, time and manual mean different things
The weight mode selects an output between the manual's stated limits, with three memories and automatic completion at the target. The timed mode similarly supports selected durations and memories. A separate manual option allows attended start/stop operation rather than requiring every run to finish a preset.
Saved values select quantity or duration. They do not move the physical grind levers. When switching methods, remember the lever positions as well as the dosing program.
Weight control also depends on the receiver being free to rest on the platform. The manual warns against contact with other parts of the grinder. A bin touching the body can interfere with the measurement even though the scale and display are functioning.
Choose a grind, then refine the recipe
The reviewed AP/BG guide gives starting points for espresso, filter methods and French press. The AP's ceramic burr configuration is specifically identified in the parts section. These are maker-supported categories, not taste measurements or a guarantee for every unpressurized basket.
The broad lever is for larger changes and the micro lever refines the setting. Follow the maker's instruction about adjusting when coffee is present. Rechecking dose and grind after changing beans is more useful than assuming a saved number recreates every part of a recipe.
A measured-input workflow is mentioned in the control explanation, but no standard single-dose loading range is established here. The AP's reservoir, scale and timer should not be combined into an invented end-of-load automatic mode.
Two systems can require separate calibration
The manual treats burr calibration and scale calibration as separate work. An unsuitable grind range is not necessarily a weighing fault, and a poor weight reading is not necessarily corrected by moving the burrs.
It also explains weight-offset adjustment and error messages. Use the exact guide to identify the problem before changing several values. Routine maintenance includes keeping the load platform clear and seating the receiver evenly, not just cleaning the burrs.
Maintenance access and the edition boundary
The upper carrier removes with the supplied burr tool for brushing. Keep the threads and mating surfaces clear, avoid cross-threading during reinstallation and keep the burrs out of water. The appropriate plastic pieces are hand-washed and dried; cleaning tablets supplement rather than replace the physical cleaning procedure.
This earlier touch-screen manual defers electrical rating to the actual label and does not establish a numerical body or hopper specification. Those fields remain open for the exact unit rather than borrowing a current page's possibly changed package.
Choose this AP configuration when both target-weight bin collection and timed direct-handle preparation are useful. Choose another explicitly documented arrangement if weighing directly into a supported handle is essential. The difference is the receiving mode, not whether the grinder merely possesses a scale.
