Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the BG weigh a filter-coffee dose into its receiving bin?
Yes. The 2022 guide describes integrated weight-mode completion with the bin seated freely on the platform. Keep the receiver from touching the body.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the AP’s direct-portafilter holder also included in this BG configuration?
No. The parts and setup instructions identify that holder as AP-only. The documented BG receiving arrangement is the grounds bin.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I manually stop a container dose instead of using a saved target?
Yes. A separate manual mode is documented in the reviewed touch-screen edition, alongside weight and timed programs.
Explore this need in the finder →A steel-burr Forté built around collection into a bin
The Forté BG in Baratza's August 2022 touch-screen operating manual uses steel flat burrs and a grounds bin on a scale platform. It is a different configuration from the AP, whose ceramic burrs and included PortaHolder should not be copied into the BG description.
The BG is a useful choice to consider when your normal work ends in a container: weigh the collected grounds automatically, run a chosen interval or supervise a manually stopped batch. This assessment stays with that older control edition instead of mixing it with an unidentified later display or package.
Three ways to control a collected batch
The shared operating guide describes target-weight, timed and manual operation. Weight mode stops at the selected output in the bin. Time mode runs for the chosen duration. The manual option allows attended operation with start/stop control.
Those choices answer different needs. A hopper-fed weight routine saves measuring a bean portion in advance. A timer repeats a duration after you establish what it produces. Manual control leaves the stopping decision with you.
For any grams-based recipe, the important distinction is whether the machine is actually using the load cell or merely showing elapsed time. A saved time does not become an output-weight measurement because the same grinder also has a scale.
Bin positioning affects weighing
The guide says to set the receiver evenly on the scale platform and keep it from touching other parts of the grinder. A correctly functioning load cell cannot compensate for the bin leaning against the body or pressure applied to it during a run.
Keep the platform clear and follow the tare instructions before establishing a new target. If the dose is wrong, check the receiving setup before changing calibration values. The manual separately explains error conditions involving the platform or an unexpected weight change.
The included handle arrangement is explicitly AP-only. This BG assessment therefore does not promise direct portafilter support. If you make espresso, the documented receiving routine remains bin collection and transfer, rather than a secretly borrowed AP accessory.
Adjustment and brew guidance
The common2022 AP/BG guide provides starting positions for espresso, several filter methods and French press, and says where model-specific instructions differ. This is the basis for the brew categories retained for this operating edition. It is not a tasting comparison or evidence that the BG shares the AP's burr material.
Use the large adjustment for a substantial change and the micro lever for refinement. Both remain physical settings that the dosing memories do not select. Note the lever positions with the target weight or duration if you alternate coffees and methods.
A generic espresso starting point does not prove a particular nonpressurized basket requirement. Nor should the separate espresso exclusion for an optional steel set in a different Vario-W document be treated as a rule for this exact Forté BG configuration.
Calibrate the right system
The guide gives distinct procedures for the burr range and the scale. A grind that is too coarse at the fine end is a different issue from an incorrect weight reading. Identify which symptom you are addressing before making changes.
The scale procedure requires a specified calibration load; the burr procedure uses the proper adjustment tool and reference sequence. Those are maintenance operations to follow carefully, not routine recipe adjustments to combine at random.
Cleaning and configuration limits
The removable upper carrier gives access for brushing. Keep its threads clear and seat it level before tightening in the documented direction. Burrs are not washed; the specified plastic hopper and bin pieces are hand-washed and dried. Tablets are supplementary and do not replace clearing an actual blockage.
The manual explicitly describes home and commercial roles, but that is not a claim of unlimited running or an independent reliability test. It defers actual voltage to the unit's label, and this assessment does not import present-day dimensions or a hopper figure from a potentially changed version.
Choose the reviewed BG for a flexible, container-based dosing station where the real benefits are weight, time and attended control. Choose an exact alternative if direct handle support, a verified regional rating or a specified one-dose loading range is essential.
