Vario 886Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Timed espresso-handle preparation plus bin collection across the maker’s broader brew categories.

The main tradeoff

The 300 g shutoff hopper is optional; exact upper-burr cleaning steps and manual-mode controls need the applicable operating book.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the standard 886 deliver a saved-time espresso dose into its holder?

Yes. The maker sheet explicitly includes the metal PortaHolder in its time-based dosing package. Check the exact handle fit and operating instructions.

Does the ordinary 886 package verify at least280 g of bean capacity?

No. The selected sheet gives230 g for the standard hopper and lists a 300 g shutoff hopper separately as an accessory.

Is this the same integrated-weight workflow as a Vario-W?

No. The 886 reference uses digital time presets. Its included holder does not add a built-in target-weight system.

The time-based Vario 886, with standard ceramic burrs

The Vario 886 is an earlier flat-burr grinder documented with a grounds bin, a supplied metal PortaHolder and three programmable time buttons. The selected reference is Baratza's October 2018 product sheet for its standard ceramic-burr configuration.

It is a useful option to understand when you want one adjustment system for several brew methods and repeatable timed collection. It is distinct from the weight-controlled Vario-W and the later Vario+, even if a seller's title shortens all of them to Vario.

The three buttons repeat a duration

The maker describes a digital timer with three saved values and fine time adjustment. These programs repeat running time rather than measuring grounds with an integrated scale. A target duration can be associated with a particular drink, but the physical grind levers remain separate.

For a regular espresso recipe, establish the useful grind position and duration with the coffee being used, then check the delivered amount. After switching coffee or changing the grind, check again before trusting the old time.

For filter brewing, the same principle applies to a larger collected batch. A longer time is not automatically the correct dose for a larger water quantity, and a familiar button does not know which brewing recipe you intend.

The holder belongs to the standard documented package

The 886 sheet explicitly includes a metal PortaHolder as well as the regular bin. That is stronger evidence of a direct-handle arrangement than a photograph or a separately listed accessory. It allows a choice between handle receiving and container collection in the maker's time-based dosing design.

Even so, a holder does not prove every portafilter diameter or shape will fit. Confirm the actual handle seating and obtain the appropriate instructions before operation. This reference does not infer a continuous range of compatible millimeters from a generic holder description.

When comparing with Vario-W, keep the measurement method in view. Direct handle support on this time-based model does not mean it can weigh a directly received handle dose.

Separate standard capacity from an optional hopper

The selected sheet specifies a 230 g standard bean hopper. Its accessories section separately offers a 300 g shutoff hopper. The larger figure should not silently replace the standard capacity merely because the accessory fits.

If changing coffee frequently is important, identify which hopper is installed and which instructions apply. A removable or shutoff hopper is a convenience for changing a store of beans; it does not itself establish a dedicated single-dose range or automatic completion of a preweighed load.

The body reference is approximately 130 mm wide,180 mm deep and 360 mm high. Allow additional room to load, remove and clean the fitted hopper. An optional change can affect the overall configuration, so do not combine accessory capacity with standard height without evidence.

Brew categories and burr identity

Baratza names espresso, manual brewing and press-pot use for the standard 54 mm ceramic flat burrs. Its macro control makes broad changes while the micro lever refines the setting. Keep both positions in your recipe notes when moving between methods.

Those maker categories are not an independent tasting result or proof of performance with every conventional nonpressurized basket. An older machine may also have replacement burrs, so identify the actual set before applying the standard description.

Use an exact operating book for maintenance

The product sheet mentions burr removal and calibration but is not a complete operating or cleaning manual. It does not establish a separate user-removable upper-burr procedure in this assessment, nor every normal manual-control sequence. Obtain the applicable886 book before disassembly.

The reference distinguishes100–120V50/60 Hz and 220–240 V versions. This assessment selects the North American supply branch rather than claiming universal voltage. Choose the documented 886 for earlier timed bin or holder preparation; choose another verified system for integrated weighing, a defined one-load specification or a current-generation package.
