Vario-W 986Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Repeated espresso or filter doses collected by weight, with macro/micro refinement and a documented brew-bar role.

The main tradeoff

No direct weighed-handle arrangement; hopper capacity conflicts between the 986 sheet and family manual.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the standard 986 weigh a filter-coffee dose as it grinds into the bin?

Yes. Its load cell and three weight memories support target-weight bin operation. Place the receiver properly and tare it before starting; the family manual limits one batch to 120 g.

Can I use the built-in scale to grind directly into my espresso handle?

That combination is not documented. The ordinary weighing instructions require the collection bin on the platform, followed by transfer.

Is at least280 g of standard hopper capacity verified across these986 documents?

No. The 986 sheet says300 g but the linked family manual labels 250 g. The exact package capacity stays unresolved instead of being silently combined.

Choose the 986 for weight-selected grounds in a bin

The Vario-W 986 is an earlier flat-burr design for someone who wants the grinder to weigh the coffee arriving in its collection bin. The December 2017 maker sheet identifies the 986 with standard ceramic burrs and a hopper shutoff. This is a specific configuration, distinct from the older985, the time-based Vario and later Vario-W+.

Its central convenience is removing a separate pre-weighing step from a hopper-fed routine. Set the desired output, seat and tare the receiver, then let the load cell control completion. It still requires careful setup; a scale is useful only when the receiver is resting correctly on it.

Three memories store weights

The operating manual describes three programmable gram targets. They save output quantity, not a grind setting. The macro and micro levers remain separate controls, so changing a preset does not automatically change from an espresso grind to a filter grind.

For a shared kitchen, associate each stored target with a written recipe that also names the coffee and lever positions. That prevents a familiar button from becoming a substitute for checking the actual brewing setup.

Put the bin on the platform before taring. The guide limits one weight-controlled batch to 120 g. Do not confuse that program limit with either the bean hopper's storage capacity or the physical room in the receiving bin. All three describe different parts of the job.

The scale needs an unobstructed receiver

Slide the bin onto the load platform gently and avoid pressure on the platform. Keep the receiver clear of surrounding surfaces. Touching or loading the receiver while a dose is being weighed changes what the scale can sense.

Weighing in the bin does not establish weighing directly into an espresso handle. The reviewed Vario-W instructions do not document a portafilter receiving arrangement for ordinary weight-based grinding. Plan to transfer the collected grounds if making espresso.

If you primarily want coffee delivered straight into a handle, that transfer is a meaningful difference. Do not take a holder mentioned in another grinder's instructions and assume it provides the same weighed workflow on this machine.

Standard ceramic burrs and optional steel are separate choices

The maker describes 54 mm ceramic flat burrs for the standard 986 and documents espresso and manual brewing. Its sheet separately describes an optional steel set for medium-to-coarse brewed coffee and expressly says that set is not for espresso.

Before applying the espresso description to a used machine, identify what is actually installed. A grinder with an optional brew-focused set is not the standard ceramic configuration assessed here. Likewise, a generic espresso description does not prove every unpressurized basket requirement.

The two adjustment levers make a large change and then a smaller refinement. Treat their positions as starting points for a particular coffee. Follow the operating instruction to run the grinder while adjusting when beans may remain between the burrs.

Capacity has an edition boundary

The 986 product sheet lists a 300 g hopper, while the linked family manual's parts diagram labels 250 g. This assessment leaves exact hopper capacity unresolved for matching rather than presenting those as one verified package. Check the fitted hopper and applicable edition if a minimum bean store is essential.

The sheet documents a 130 mm-wide,180 mm-deep and 360 mm-high body and a North American 110 V AC reference. Allow additional loading and servicing room. A dimension for the machine body does not guarantee it can be cleaned in place under a cabinet.

Maintain both the burr mechanism and the scale

The manual includes user removal of the upper burr carrier using the stated burr tool. Keep burrs dry, hand-wash the appropriate plastic pieces and clean the seating surfaces before reinstalling. A trapped speck on a mating surface can affect the mechanical relationship you just set.

Scale calibration is a separate procedure using a 200 g calibration load. Do not confuse it with adjusting the burr range. If the displayed weight or dose is wrong, identify which system needs attention instead of turning every adjustment at once.

Choose the standard ceramic986 for an earlier hopper-fed, target-weight bin workflow with a documented home and brew-bar role. Choose another verified arrangement for direct weighed handle dosing, a confirmed single-dose load or a precisely established hopper minimum.
