Virtuoso+ / ZCG587Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

Alternating filter and French-press recipes, with timed bin collection or attended pulse grinding.

The main tradeoff

No integrated weight target; manual held-basket support does not prove hands-free timed handle dosing.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I repeat a grinding time for drip coffee or French press into the bin?

Yes. The digital timer supports a duration up to 40 seconds. It repeats time rather than weighing the coffee; check the produced dose when beans or settings change.

Can I hold an espresso basket under it and stop grinding by releasing the control?

Yes. The operating manual specifically describes that attended position in pulse mode. It does not establish a supplied hands-free holder or handle diameters.

Will it stop at my selected weight of grounds?

No integrated target-weight mode is documented. Its timer and pulse controls do not measure the finished grounds.

A digital timer for a familiar home-coffee routine

The Virtuoso+ suits a home brewer who wants to keep beans in a hopper, select a grind size and repeat a grinding duration. Baratza documents settings for espresso, automatic drip, manual filter brewing and French press. Its digital timer is the defining control difference from the earlier Virtuoso's mechanical timer.

That makes it useful to consider when your brewing methods vary but you do not need the grinder to measure the finished grounds. A time setting is a repeatable starting point, not a promise that different coffees or grind positions will deliver the same mass.

Choose a duration, then check what it produces

The operating guide allows a grinding time up to 40 seconds and describes adjustments down to tenths of a second. Pressing the dial begins the timed cycle. The pause and reset instructions let you interrupt or restart the selected duration without treating an interruption as a new recipe.

For a regular morning batch, first establish a useful combination of bean, grind position and duration. If your recipe depends on grams, use an appropriate separate scale to check the grounds. Recheck after changing coffee or moving between brewing methods. The timer controls how long the motor runs; it is not an integrated weighing system.

This is also why an illuminated collection bin and a digital display should not be mistaken for a scale. They help you see and operate the grinder, while the quantity judgment remains yours.

Held-button grinding is a separate option

The manual describes a pulse mode entered by a longer press of the dial. In that mode the motor runs while you hold the control and stops when you release it, within the documented maximum run. It is useful when you want to supervise a small amount rather than let the saved duration finish.

Baratza specifically describes holding an espresso basket beneath the outlet in pulse mode. Keep the basket clear of the chute. This establishes a direct, attended receiving position; it does not establish that the standard machine includes a cradle that will hold every portafilter hands-free.

In particular, do not combine that instruction with the timed program and assume a hands-free timed-portafilter arrangement. The ordinary timed workflow uses the supplied bin. A separately documented holder may change how a handle is supported, but its inclusion and fit should be checked for the actual package.

One dial covers several methods, with limits to the evidence

The 40 grind positions include maker starting points for several brewed methods and espresso. Use those starting points to guide adjustment, rather than expecting one numbered setting to be correct for every roast, dose and brewer.

For someone alternating French press and a filter brewer, the important task is keeping a short record of each recipe. Move back to the appropriate starting region, then refine the grind with the coffee being used. An espresso reference in the guide does not by itself prove compatibility with every demanding unpressurized espresso basket. That more specific requirement remains unestablished here.

Keep the standard hopper distinct from single-dose accessories

The current US reference lists a 300 g hopper and a body approximately 130 mm wide, 150 mm deep and 340 mm high. Those figures describe that reference configuration. Older product literature has a smaller hopper, and separately sold hoppers should not be used to create a fictional combination of the smallest height and largest capacity.

A hopper-fed routine and a dedicated single-dose routine also ask different questions. If switching beans every brew is your priority, verify the operating instructions for the exact hopper you intend to use. A separately offered single-dose hopper is not proof that the standard configuration has a specified minimum or maximum one-load dose.

Cleaning and the space around it

The removable upper ring burr gives access for the cleaning procedure. Unplug first, brush the burrs and follow the gasket and alignment instructions when rebuilding the stack. The manual distinguishes dry burr care from washing the removable plastic pieces; allow washed pieces to dry fully before fitting them again.

Leave working room above the body to load beans and remove the hopper, and room in front to withdraw the bin. The published body size is not the total service clearance. Choose the Virtuoso+ for documented home brewing with both timed-bin and attended pulse options. Choose a different documented workflow if built-in weight dosing, automatic completion of a measured bean load or a verified hands-free handle arrangement is essential.
