MDJ — 2024 touchscreen manual configurationIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A trained-operator station that wants repeated direct-to-portafilter dosing and clearly managed controls.

The main tradeoff

Dose-weight counters in the reviewed manual are calculated from configured values; they do not establish a scale that weighs each dose.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I remove the portafilter briefly to settle the grounds and resume the dose?

With Stop&Go enabled, the reviewed touchscreen system pauses the remaining grind time when the portafilter is removed and resumes it when reinserted. The enabled settings matter.

Is its dose-weight display an integrated weighing stop?

The manual describes weight counters calculated from configured dose values and grinding time. This does not meet an integrated scale-controlled stop requirement.

Does it support a large hopper for repeated commercial dosing?

The reviewed MDJ branch documents a 1600 g hopper and professional use. Follow the actual nameplate and operating/rest limits rather than treating capacity as continuous duty.

The touchscreen MDJ is a good fit for a station where several trained operators need to repeat a hopper-fed portafilter routine. The useful features are its dose controls and the way it can pause a timed grind, rather than a promise that a screen will manage the recipe. Specify the touchscreen generation when comparing machines: the MDJ name has also been used for earlier configurations.

Turn the controls into a clear service routine

The current MDJ reference describes a portafilter hook, flat burrs and a hopper intended for repeated use. In the January 2024 handbook, the operator chooses a dose and activates grinding with the supported filter holder. The fork and retaining arrangement should be adjusted for the actual handle, not assumed to fit every accessory combination.

For a shared station, make the chosen program easy to identify. Establish the collected dose for the coffee in use, then check it again after a change of beans or grind. This reduces the risk of a saved time becoming an unexplained number that each operator interprets differently.

Stop&Go can make a timed dose easier to handle

The documented Stop&Go option pauses the remaining time when the filter holder is removed and resumes after it returns. This can be useful if you need to settle the grounds partway through a dose. It is an enabled operating option, so inspect the settings rather than expecting every machine to behave that way by default.

The system also documents manual dispensing. That gives an operator a different way to start and stop grinding when a saved program is not appropriate. Decide which actions staff should use for the usual dose and which are for an occasional top-up. Consistent operation is more useful than leaving every available mode unexplained.

A weight counter is not a weighing system

The handbook includes dose-weight settings and counters, but explains calculations based on configured weights and dispensing time. These are not evidence that a load cell weighs the arriving grounds and controls the stop. If actual grind-by-weight is essential, choose a model that explicitly documents that mechanism.

Likewise, a time program cannot decide what dose belongs in your basket. It repeats an operating duration after you have established the preparation. Keep a suitable external measurement routine when checking the output, and do not read a familiar number on the screen as an independent measurement of that particular dose.

Choose the exact operating version

The current product reference and shared handbook name more than one speed branch. This article keeps the standard MDJ separate from MDJ SPEED. The selected manual branch includes a 110 V, 60 Hz supply; the machine's nameplate and supplied instructions must agree with the intended installation.

Hopper capacity is useful for planning repeated loading, but it does not eliminate the operating and rest limits. Arrange professional installation and the documented cleaning routine. The current web table also contains inconsistent body-dimension formatting, so confirm an accurate drawing before fitting a recess. Choose MDJ when its controllable portafilter workflow solves a real service need. For portion-loaded coffee changes, measured-weight stopping or a simple filter-coffee bin, require those separate functions rather than assuming that a larger professional grinder provides all of them.
