A useful fit for

Household recipes that target a total ground-coffee weight in a correctly tared receiving container.

The main tradeoff

Its scale and direct portafilter position cannot be combined for automatic weighed portafilter dosing.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it stop at a chosen total weight in the grounds container?

Yes. Grams mode reads what is already in the tared container and grinds toward the selected total. A new target is not automatically an additional dose.

Can it weigh automatically while grinding directly into a portafilter?

No. The documented manual/portafilter mode disables the integrated scale and cup/gram selection. The direct receiving position is supported only with manual stopping in this guide.

Does the sixteen-ounce hopper make it a documented single-dose auto-stop grinder?

No such normal workflow is established. The empty-bean protection is not evidence that the appliance supports weighing one bean load and automatically finishing that load.

Weight-controlled collection, with a separate manual espresso position

The OXO 8710200 with Integrated Scale is worth understanding if you want a grinder to stop at a measured quantity in its collection container. Its older Barista Brain operating guide describes cups, grams and manual modes. The important limit is that its documented portafilter mode turns the scale off: this is not automatic grind-by-weight directly into a supported espresso handle.

This assessment refers to that established scale-equipped model and operating edition. OXO's time-based 8717000 is physically and functionally distinct. Shared burr compatibility does not add the scale or its control modes to the newer-looking alternative.

A target is the total already in the container

In grams mode, the scale reads the grounds already present, and you select the total you want the container to hold. If coffee remains from a previous cycle, the new setting is not automatically an additional amount. Understanding that distinction prevents a common expectation mismatch when topping up a batch.

The reviewed guide offers targets from one to 125 grams. It also offers a cups mode that calculates the amount using a programmed coffee-to-cup relationship. The strength adjustment changes that relationship in cups mode; it is not a grind-size adjustment and does not alter every other mode.

Choose grams if your brewing recipe specifies a total coffee weight. Choose cups if you want to use and adjust the maker's conversion for a familiar brewing routine. Neither choice determines the water, brew method or extraction recipe for you.

Why the portafilter icon needs a closer look

The operating guide permits removing the bin and positioning a portafilter beneath the chute in manual mode. In that mode, cup and gram selection are disabled. Pressing the control starts grinding and pressing it again stops. You make the stopping decision.

That means two individually true features—an integrated scale and a supported direct portafilter position—cannot be combined into a promise of direct target-weight dispensing. If that exact combination is essential, compare a grinder whose scale is documented to control a dose in the portafilter itself.

The guide does not establish a universal cradle fit or a list of compatible handle diameters. Check the actual receiving position and clearances instead of assuming any portafilter will be supported hands-free.

Tare and stability are part of using the scale

The standard arrangement includes a metal plate, collection container and lid. Changing that combination requires the documented tare procedure. Without the correct zero reference, a sophisticated display can still represent the wrong starting condition.

Keep the scale area clean and avoid touching the receiving vessel or shaking the grinder during weighing. These are practical reasons to give the appliance a stable counter position. A built-in scale is convenient, but it does not remove the need to keep the weighing arrangement consistent.

Hopper use and brewing guidance

The original manual describes a sixteen-ounce bean hopper and manufacturer starting ranges for espresso, filter coffee and French press. That broad brewing guidance should remain separate from a stricter requirement for a documented nonpressurized basket or a particular portafilter accessory.

The hopper has a retaining door for removal. This helps when changing beans without tipping the entire grinder, but it does not prove a normal one-weighed-load workflow. An empty-bean warning protects operation; it should not be read as a purpose-built single-dose auto-stop program.

Care, running limits and an older electrical edition

The user can remove the upper burr by its handle for brushing. The guide distinguishes the washable containers and plate from the burrs and powered body, and it excludes dishwasher cleaning. Reinstall the upper burr until its locking engagement is confirmed before replacing the hopper.

Use the running and rest limits in this exact guide, particularly for larger batches. Its North American electrical instructions use 110 V AC wording and defer to the unit label. They do not establish every later electrical revision; verify the actual model rather than importing the time-based model's supply details.

Choose this scale-equipped reference for measured stopping into a container, with a separate manually controlled portafilter option. The current reachability of a support document does not promise present availability. For a buying comparison, check the actual version and make sure its receiving and stopping modes support the combination you want.
