Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I repeat a remembered grinding time for filter coffee and French press?
Yes. The time dial remains at its selected position and the motor stops after that interval. Recheck the amount when changing beans or grind position.
Explore this need in the finder →Does this OXO stop automatically at a gram target?
No. SKU 8717000 is the time-based model. The separate 8710200 has the integrated scale; part compatibility does not transfer that weighing function.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I remove both burrs to wash the grinding mechanism?
No. The user guide says only the upper burr is removable, and the burrs/interior are cleaned with a brush rather than water. Follow the separate hand-washing rules for the hopper and bin.

The OXO 8717000 Conical Burr Coffee Grinder is a practical match for someone who wants to turn a time dial, press once and collect grounds in a bin. It remembers the selected time for the next cycle. That is its convenience: repeating an elapsed duration without programming a weight target or learning a complicated menu.
It is separate from OXO's integrated-scale 8710200. The shared brand, conical-burr wording and replacement-part overlap do not make this time-based model a weighing grinder. Choose the stopping rule you actually want before comparing the names.
The timer is a starting point for your recipe
The operating guide recommends beginning with a short trial and changing the duration according to the amount and brewing method. The dial remains at the selected time, and the motor stops after that run. Pressing the control can interrupt a cycle, but that is not a documented separate, unprogrammed manual mode.
When you change coffee or grind position, check the result again. Ten seconds of one coffee at a coarse position need not deliver the same grams as ten seconds at a finer position. Remembering the dial is useful; remembering the relationship between time and your actual recipe is still part of the owner's work.
An external scale is appropriate if the recipe is weight-based. It gives you a way to check the grounds and decide what time to choose next. It does not make the grinder itself stop on a scale reading.
Brew range does not specify every espresso arrangement
OXO names espresso, pour-over or drip, and French press in the maker's operating guidance. The dial has fifteen principal grind positions with additional adjustment between them according to the current product description. Select a useful starting location, brew and refine for your coffee.
The broad espresso use statement does not establish a direct portafilter holder or a particular nonpressurized basket. The reviewed configuration uses its collection container. If avoiding a transfer into your handle is essential, look for documented direct-delivery support rather than assuming an espresso label supplies it.
A reservoir you can remove without emptying the whole machine
The current exact SKU reference specifies a three-quarter-pound, twelve-ounce bean hopper. A retaining-door mechanism keeps beans in the hopper when it is properly removed. This is useful for cleaning and coffee changes, provided you follow the locking and removal sequence.
The instructions describe filling the hopper for grinding. They do not establish an automatic one-weighed-load program merely because it is possible to put fewer beans inside. If single dosing is the main requirement, choose a grinder whose normal workflow explicitly supports it and gives the relevant load limits.
Give the bin room to collect coffee beneath the outlet and empty it before its maximum line. Using a larger hopper does not increase the bin's receiving space. Grounds backing into the chute can produce a blockage even while the motor still runs.
Upper-burr care is supported; full disassembly is not routine
The guide describes removal of the upper burr by lifting its handle and turning it to unlock. It specifically says only the upper burr is removable. Use a brush for the burrs and chute, keep liquid away from the grinding interior and follow the marked locking sequence when refitting the burr.
The hopper and receiving container have hand-washing instructions; the electronic grinder does not go into the dishwasher. Dry permitted washed parts before assembly and check that the upper burr is firmly engaged. The maintenance instructions do not authorize improvised removal of the lower mechanism.
A home appliance with a rest requirement
The reviewed manual states household use only and gives cooling guidance between runs. Plan larger batches around that guidance rather than treating thermal protection as the normal stopping point. A timer ending a dose and a protection circuit interrupting overheating are different events.
The US exact product page and parts reference identify SKU 8717000 even though the linked instruction book carries a different internal footer number. Keep that documented bridge rather than renaming the grinder from a publication code. Follow the supply label and regional instructions on the actual unit.
Choose 8717000 for remembered timed grinding into a container across the maker's stated brewing range. Choose a supported weight-control design if a measured target should stop the motor, or a documented portafilter arrangement if the transfer step is what you want to change.
